You asked for it, for one week
only, the original and the best top five stories of the week main man is back.
Well, no one has asked for it….uhh…nobody probably knows I used to do this, and
uh nobody cares. But I’m back!
1.
The
Football League Returns
Speaking of being back, for
thousands of football fans around the UK, the agony of the summer months full
of trips to Ikea, doing the garden or *shudder* shoe shopping, is finally over.
The season kicked off with my beloved Cardiff City with a lacklustre
performance and battling out a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers. Shock of the
weekend has to be Bournemouth beating Huddersfield away, considering in the
same fixture last season they got thumped 5-1. Eddie Howe has really done an
amazing job at Bournemouth, and they are my pick for a surprise play off spot
come the end of the season.
2.
Real
Madrid Win the Super Cup.
In a result that shocked no one,
Real Madrid beat Europa League winners Sevilla FC 2-0 in the magnificent (well
I would say that) Cardiff City Stadium. Being at the match, the most terrifying
aspect of the game was the fact Real Madrid never seemed to accelerate beyond 2nd
gear, and comfortabley beat a decent looking Sevilla team. Watching the likes
of Benzema, Ronaldo, Bale and James Rodriquez play on my home team’s pitch is
an experience that will stay with me for a long time to come.
3.
Wayne
Rooney Named as Manchester United Captain
It has been a poorly kept secret
that Van Gaal was looking to choose between Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie
to be his new captain. What has been a surprise is that Rooney was given the
armband over RVP who Van Gaal knows well from his Holland days. I don’t personally
think you should give Wayne Rooney the responsibility of leading arguably one
of the biggest clubs in the world, especially with his tendency for
embarrassing himself with off the field activities. For me personally, I would have gone with Darren Fletcher,
could there be more of a role model for the kids at Manchester United, hell for
football fans everywhere?
4.
Transfers,
Transfers Everywhere
With the transfer window
deadline fast approaching, clubs have been busy bringing in players to improve
their squad. This week, the biggest transfers have been the signing of Fraser
Forster moving to Southampton for £10 million, Eliaquim Mangala moving to
Manchester City for £32 million and Thomas Vermaelen swapping the Emirates for
the Nou Camp. In a move that has divided Chelsea fans, Frank Lampard has joined
Manchester City on a 6-month loan until the beginning of the new MLS season. I
am personally staggered by the amount of Chelsea fans that are demanding that
all references to Lampard be stripped from Stamford Bridge, and how he should
never have played for another English club. I have so far failed to hear one
compelling argument that would make me even consider this anything other than
an over reaction.
5.
Chairman
Troubles
Imagine this if you will. You
are the chairman of a club that recently got relegated to the conference. You
have just appointed a new manager, and in the first game of the season you beat
a team 5-0 away from home. You would be delighted right? Anthony Kleanthous the
chairman of Barnet was far from happy after the match. It appears that he
missed the first half of the game against Chester were Barnet scored 3 of their
5 due to the heavy traffic on the M6.
He managed to watch the 4th goal, but was asked to move his
car when the 5th goal went in.
This same week, the chairman of
Fleetwood Town missed the start of the match against Rotherham because he
turned up at the Don Valley Arena, which was the home of Rotherham up until 2
years ago. He blamed his Sat Nav for the error, but me thinks someone hasn’t
been doing their homework properly!
You really couldn’t make this
stuff up.
